COURSE ATTENDANCE AND STUDENT SUPPORT
Class attendance is not mandatory, but in-person participation is strongly recommended to get the most out of your degree programme.
-
Active and guided learning: direct interaction with professors helps unpack complex exam materials, transforming passive reading into critical understanding. Classroom dialogue brings out your full potential.
-
Building a support network: university is a social experience. Attending lectures connects you with peers, study groups, shared study resources, and collective exam strategies—building a supportive community during demanding times.
-
Effective time management: attending lectures means absorbing concepts in real time. Maintaining a steady pace throughout the semester allows you to approach exam sessions with a solid foundation.
-
Practical skills: for lab-based courses and interactive seminars, physical presence provides hands-on experience and practical skills that textbooks alone cannot convey.
Support for Working Students
While we actively encourage class attendance, we fully recognize the needs of working students and strive to accommodate their specific circumstances. Detailed information and resources for every course are available on the Moodle platform. Working students are invited to reach out directly to their professors at the beginning of the semester to discuss their specific needs and arrangements.
KEY INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS
CFU and ECTS equivalency
Course credits are measured in CFU (Crediti Formativi Universitari), where 1 CFU = 1 ECTS (25 hours of total student workload). Passing an assessment earns you the full credit amount assigned to that course, regardless of the numerical grade.
Assessment formats & ongoing assessment
Evaluation methods vary by course and include traditional final exams (written or oral) as well as continuous assessment.
Ongoing assessment is an approach widely adopted throughout this degree programme as a core part of the learning proposal, designed to facilitate continuous learning. Students are expected to attend classes and actively engage in all assignments and learning opportunities. This process may include homework, quizzes, intermediate tests, teamwork, project work, case studies, written assignments, and student presentations. Specific requirements for each course are outlined in its syllabus.
Oral exams (esami orali) are a standard feature of the Italian academic system and consist of a structured academic dialogue with the professor or examination board.
Exam sessions (Appelli)
Classes are paused during designated exam periods across three main sessions (Winter, Summer, and Autumn). You can check the official exam schedules on the
School Exam Calendar.
Mandatory exam registration
To take an exam, you must register online in advance through the
Unifi Online Student Portal (SOL). Sitting an exam without prior online registration is not permitted.
Grade acceptance, refusal, and failing marks
If you pass an exam, you can accept or refuse the grade directly through the
Unifi Online Student Portal (SOL) if you wish to retake it in a later session to improve your score. If you receive a failing grade (below 18/30), the exam is not passed and no action (acceptance or refusal) is required on your part. Failed attempts are not recorded on your official transcript and will not affect your Grade Point Average (GPA).
ASSESMENT AND GRADING POLICY
The programme adopts the Italian grading system, which measures academic performance on a 30-point scale, where 18/30 is the minimum passing mark and 30/30 represents top performance. For exceptional achievements, professors may award 30 cum laude (30 with honors).
Grading scale
- 30 cum laude: Outstanding performance
- 28 – 30: Excellent
- 25 – 27: Very Good
- 21 – 24: Good / Satisfactory
- 18 – 20: Pass (Sufficient)
- Below 18: Fail (Not passed)
Note: qualitative descriptions (e.g., "Excellent", "Very Good") are indicative guidelines provided for reference purposes. Official credit transfer and grade recognition follow official ECTS statistical grade distribution tables. For further information, please consult this
